ABSTRACT

Pointed polysynchronous interactions (PPIs) were initiated by the participants of this study to promote more adequate interactions between learner-learner, learners-teachers, and learners-learning materials in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) science hybrid learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This photovoice study spotlighted Indonesian primary school teachers' initiatives in helping their pupils enhance their English proficiency while learning mathematics. We investigated their efforts for scaffolding when teaching mathematics to the first graders, with a particular focus on translation, translanguaging, and trans-semiotizing. As collaborative research, this photovoice study involved a mathematics' teacher and her co-teacher to provide photos of how translation, translanguaging, and trans-semiotizing were practiced within the PPIs. The teachers described their photos using the SHOWeD technique before we analyzed the data thematically, then returned them to the teachers for validation. Results showed successful practices of translation, translanguaging, and trans-semiotizing, while some challenges arouse because of time limitation for hybrid learning recommended by the Indonesian government. Translation enhanced the students' academic and social performances but required longer time of implementation. Meanwhile, trans-semiotizing was advocated to strengthen the teacher's translanguaging because of the students' English proficiency. Feasibility of alternating L2 and L1 in interaction and connecting them with semiotic resources to negotiate meaning are suggested to practice if hybrid learning should be conducted continuously during new normal.

ABSTRACT

The role of Digital Human Resources Management (DHRM) in the era of globalization, especially in the COVID-19 pandemic, has made a major contribution to sustainable business performance. This is interesting to study considering that the DHRM work process will take place through mobile, electronic media, social media via the internet, and also with the help of IT (information technology). This research aims to analyze the role of Digital Human Resource Management (DHRM) in contributing to the improvement of sustainable business performance in companies in DKI Jakarta. The importance of the role of DHRM is investigated because DHRM is able to do human work through software and several applications, which are supported by the internet network. Digitalization in HRM will enable companies to operate more efficiently and relevantly in the future. This type of research is qualitative which involved managers working in oil companies and transportation companies in DKI Jakarta who used DHRM in the companies where they worked. This study analyzed the data using the triangulation method through documentation, interviews and direct observation in the field with case studies. The results of the study explain that several digital HRM practices have been carried out in several companies, but other practical activities have not been carried out optimally. This is because the support from the system and the digitization of business processes that are included in HR practices are not yet optimal. However, the company realizes that DHRM is able to improve business performance in a sustainable manner. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Translanguaging enables students to communicate in multiple languages in an English-dominant classroom. It has received considerable attention from scholars in content and language integrated learning (CLIL). Its implementation in primary schools in European countries has been adopted in Asian countries, including Indonesia. This study employed a narrative inquiry investigating a teacher who taught first graders both content matter and English during the COVID-19 forced-remote learning. Furthermore, data were gathered using semi-structured interviews to guide the participant in narrating CLIL science teaching experiences. Virtual observations were carried out eight times to obtain evidence of translanguaging practiced. Due to forced-remote learning, the results indicated that the teacher had to find the most convenient ways to instruct the young students without adding to their burden. Furthermore, it was reported that scaffolding by translanguaging was planned systematically by valuing the students’ L1 and alternating it with English as the target language. The findings also discussed the practical implications of this study to maintain young learners' (YLs) engagement through translanguaging strategies. © 2022 The Author(s).

ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 has been a global problem and many aspects related to the mechanism of COVID-19 in damaging patients’ organs have not been known. Interleukin 6 is a severity marker of the cytokine storm in COVID-19. This study aimed to determine the relationship between interleukin 6 with cortisol and adrenaline in COVID-19 patients. Methods: Employing a cross-sectional design, the study was conducted at UNS (Sebelas Maret University) hospital from May to September 2020. Examination of interleukin 6, adrenaline and cortisol by taking the patients’ blood sample was conducted at 8 AM on the first and seventh day of hospitalization. Statistical test was performed using Pearson correlation. P is significant if it is less than 0.05. Results: This study shows that in COVID-19 patients, there is adrenal insufficiency with an average cortisol level of 0.91+0.53 ng/mL and an average adrenaline level of 9.20+4.29 pg/mL. The mean interleukin 6 in this study is 8.31+13.7 pg / mL. Interleukin 6 will increase the secretion of the hormone cortisol (p = 0.01;r = 0.575) and is not related to adrenaline (p = 0.057;r = 0.771). Conclusion: The COVID-19 patients experienced adrenal insufficiency, and Interleukin 6 associated with an increased cortisol hormone. The use of steroids may be beneficial in COVID-19 patients with adrenal insufficiency. © 2022 UPM Press. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

The present study explores the international students' experiences of learning the Indonesian language (bahasa Indonesia) during the COVID-19 outbreak. Five students who learned bahasa Indonesia for foreigners were recruited for this narrative research. They were from Thailand, Vietnam, Yemen, Sierra Leone, and Japan. Narrative data were collected through in-depth interviews and then analyzed using language appraisal and emotional geography theories. Findings showed that the forced remote learning affected students' emotional conditions, such as sadness, disappointment, anxiety, and resignation which contradicted their expectations. This empirical evidence suggests a change in remote learning management by integrating a sound instructional design to create autonomous learning.
